Mayor's Medal of Honor Memorial

Mayor Phil Hardberger, will soon be conducting a press conference to announce a fund raising initiative for the construction of a memorial for Medal of Honor (MOH) recipients from San Antonio. As we enter into the research and development phase of the MOH project, our design consultant, Barbara Grygutis will be in town to conduct informal sessions to solicit ideas and recommendations for the memorial. She will meet with  downtown stakeholders, Veteran's  organizations and military groups, businesses, and MOH recipients and family members.  As members of the Downtown Alliance, we are asking for your participation, for the interview scheduled for May 28 th from  10:30 to  11:30  a .m.  with our design consultant at our EDD offices, located at Frost Bank Towers, 100 W. Houston, Suite 1900. Parking is available at the Frost Bank Building and we will  be glad to validate your ticket.

Following is some background information on the project. In March 2006, the Mayor requested that the City's Veterans Affairs Commission (VAC) provide recommendations for creating a memorial to honor San Antonio Medal of Honor recipients. As you know, the Medal of Honor (MOH) is the highest honor, awarded to military members "for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life, above and beyond the call of duty, in actual combat against an armed enemy force." The VAC recommended the memorial be placed in the Veterans Memorial Plaza Historic District (formerly the Auditorium Circle Historic District). After Council approved hiring Barbara Grygutis a national renowned artist from Tucson Arizona on March 13, 2008, as the City's MOH design consultant, the project has become a priority for the Mayor, who anticipates completion by the time he leaves office. This project will certainly be a highly visible undertaking, not only locally, but nationally and will complement the river improvements and the Performing Arts, anticipated for the Municipal Auditorium.

Your input is very valuable to us as the development of the Veterans Memorial Plaza Historic District will be located in the heart of San Antonio and will impact the downtown area, so we hope that you can participate in this very important project.

If you can join us, please e-mail Ms. Carmelina Davis at: carmelina.davis@sanantonio.gov or call her at (210) 207- 6529.
